During the festive season, burglars will take advantage of the fact that your house may be filled with presents or that you may be going away to visit family or friends. Don’t let a burglary ruin your holiday spirit, keep these tips in mind to make sure your home is more secure.
Don’t display your tree with gifts under it in your front window that faces the road. People passing by your home can easily see what’s inside, and it’s easy for a burglar to smash your window and make off with your gifts. If your tree is highly visible, instead opt to put gifts out the night before or Christmas morning.
If you will be away for a while, try to set a timer for your outdoor lights so they don’t stay 24 hours a day giving the impression no one is home. Don’t let leaflets or newspapers stack up outside your home or in your post box drop, ask a neighbour if they could make sure the front of your home is clear of papers.
Stacking all your empty boxes from your new gifts outside your home is just advertising what is inside. Potential burglars can see you’ve got a brand new tv, laptop, sound systems and whatever other packaging you place at the curb and know it is worth breaking into your home. Take big boxes to your local recycle centre instead or break them down and cut them up so no one would know what they used to contain.
This may sound silly to mention, but if you’ve put an extension cord through a window or door to reach your outdoor lights, you’re vulnerable to someone getting in. Get outside outlets installed outside so that all your windows and doors can remain locked and sealed.
If you haven’t got one already, a security system is a great way to deter potential burglars as often just the presence of one will make them miss out your home as a target. If you already have a security system, it’s a good time to make sure that everything is working properly and to the best of the systems abilities so you know you are protected. We offer a 24 hour remote monitored CCTV to catch any activations to your security system and key holding services should an alarm be triggered and require someone to be dispatched.
